Last month we surprised our son with his first trip to Disney World. We carefully planned the trip for the week of Halloween, hoping to enjoy the special festivities, including Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, while avoiding the summertime crowds and heat. The Hunger Games, however, had everyone wanting to wield a bow and arrow. That is how we discovered Vingt Neuf Bowman (VNB), a local archery club that offers classes for archers of all ages and skill levels.

This summer my son spent three weeks at Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation, a BSA (Boy Scouts of America) summer camp located in Whiteford, MD. According to their website,they are located on the 5th largest area of undeveloped land in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Broad Creek offers three different summer camp experiences: a traditional Boy Scout summer camp (Camp Saffran), a traditional Cub Scout summer camp (Camp Oest), and a Boy Scout STEM summer camp (Camp Spencer). About two years ago, my son told me that he really wanted to sign up for Boy Scouts. I reached out to three different troops in my area, with little-to-no response. His interest in scouting continued to grow, despite the fact that none of his friends or family were in scouts, and despite the fact that we couldn’t find an active troop seemingly anywhere. After a year of sporadic inquiries, including an inquiry to the district itself, I learned of an active troop that came highly recommended (more…)
